Overview
There are two ways to import targets from a CSV. You can either use the "CSV Imports" tab on the Create Targets page or import from the Campaign Wizard in the Target Selection tab. Both options allow you to select whether the file has a header row, whether to update existing targets information, whether or not to deactivate any targets in the system that are not in the file being uploaded, and whether you want to only update targets that already exist in the account. Deactivating targets will set their status to inactive so that they are no longer counted against your seat limit but leave them in the system so that no data is lost.
NOTE: Enabling 'Verbose Import Details' for large CSV files (greater than 2000 rows) can impact performance.
NOTE: To see how to properly format a CSV file for import, see our How to properly format a CSV file article.

Create Targets Page
To import targets via a CSV file, go to Targets/Groups > Create Targets and click on the CSV Import tab.
This page will display the following options:
- Select the group below or create a new one to import your targets to - Select a group to import the targets into. Alternatively, you can create a new group from this page.
- Select CSV file to import - Select a CSV file that contains your targets.
-
Import Options - Optional settings for the import.
- File Contains Header Line - select this option if the CSV file contains a header line (a header line describes each column).
- Update Record If It Exists Already - select this option if you want to update targets that are already inside the Portal using the target data in the CSV file.
- Only Update Existing Records, Active Targets in Group - If enabled, targets in the CSV that are active in the group will be updated with the new information from the import file, rather than skipped.
- Only Update Existing Records, Active Targets in Account - If enabled, targets in the CSV that are active in ANY group in the account will be updated with the new information from the import file, rather than skipped.
- Deactivate Records If Not Present in File - select this option if you want to deactivate targets in the group if they do not exist in the CSV file.
To import on the Create Targets page, follow these steps:
- Navigate to Targets/Groups > Create Targets.
- Click the CSV Import tab.
- Select a group you would like to import your targets into.
- Click the Browse button and find the CSV file that contains your targets' information.
- Click the "Review Import" button.
Once you have clicked the "Review Import" button, the system will allow you to map the fields in the file to PhishingBox default target fields and custom fields you have configured. If the CSV column names have a close match to existing target field on PhishingBox, they will be automatically mapped. If you do not want certain fields to be imported for the targets (such as the last_name
field in the above picture), then choose the [Do Not Import]
option from the drop-down above the column.
NOTE: To map custom fields, you will first have to create those fields in the group settings.
If the data looks good and you have your fields properly mapped, click the "Import Now" button. If you see any issues with the CSV and need to re-upload it, you can click the "Back" button to return to the previous step.
Once you click the "Import Now" button you will be prompted with the results of the import. The "Manage Group" button will direct you to the Manage Groups page and the "Download Import log" will download the import log in CSV format. This log contains email, result, and message (error message) data.
